Maranoa's Mack Mason Red-dy to rumble at Queensland Reds

MACK Mason had better get used to pulling on a rugby jersey - he's about to being doing it a whole lot more of it.

The talented youngster, who grew up near Dunkeld, has switched codes to sign with Super Rugby side the Queensland Reds after spending a year with NRL franchise the Melbourne Storm's youth squad.

While Mason comes from rugby league heartland, he said the game they played in heaven was not a foreign concept for him.

"I played it at school when I went to Churchie so it's all about taking the opportunities that are given to me," he said.

While at the Storm, Mason got to train with future NRL immortals Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk, whom he said taught him a lot about professionalism.

"Billy and Cooper were great - learning from them taught me a lot about how to be a professional and how to treat this like a job," he said.

Ironically his manager Clinton Schifoske, who himself played rugby league before converting to the Queensland Reds, was the one who engineered the move, which has seen Mason already throw the jersey on for Queensland Country in the National Rugby Championship.

But his goals extend beyond just playing in the NRC.

"My goal is to make the Australian under-20s and then we'll see - it would be great to work with the Reds," he said.
