Magpies swoop to take last-gasp win

NETBALL: A last-gasp goal from shooter Caitlin Thwaites has sealed a dramatic 55-54 win for Collingwood Magpies over the NSW Swifts in the Super Netball championship.

With the scores locked at 54-54 and less than 10 seconds remaining, the former Swifts player missed from her first attempt but the umpire's whistle saved her blushes and she made no mistake second time round.

The victory was all the more pleasing for the Magpies after they lost by a goal last round.

The visiting Magpies went out to an early six-goal lead before the Swifts fought back to cut the lead to three at the first-quarter break.

They carried that momentum into the second stanza levelling the score at 18-18 before moving out to a two-goal advantage.

But the Magpies fought back, scoring three of the last four goals of the quarter to go in at half-time level 27-27.

Collingwood began to find more space in the the third quarter with Madi Robinson and Kim Ravaillion taking control.

The Magpies took a 43-39 lead on the back of a nine-goal quarter by goal attack Cody Lange.

The Swifts fought back to draw level again in the final term at 45-45 with 10 minutes remaining and before swooping to a two-goal lead.

The Magpies took the advantage again with seven minutes remaining, stretching to a 52-49 lead.

Once more the Swifts levelled 52-52 before the grandstand finish.
