Main Street to open by Christmas
HERVEY Bay’s Main Street will be open for Christmas — Mother Nature allowing.
“Unseasonal wet weather has substantially delayed the project,” a spokesperson for the Fraser Coast council said yesterday.
“However the contractor has decided to allocate additional resources towards the project and is aiming to be complete and be open for traffic by December 24, weather permitting.”
An update report on the progress of the $7million, year-long project will be presented to the next council infrastructure and environment committee next Wednesday.
“Although every effort has been made to open the road before Christmas, landscaping and concrete works will continue into the new year.”
An associated part of the process is the installation of a new 750mm-diameter main at the top of Main Street by Wide Bay Water which will supply the city with water pumped from Ghost Hill reservoirs.
“This action has been planned for several years to meet the growing demands of Hervey Bay city,” a Wide Bay Water spokesperson said yesterday. “All going to plan, the top end of Main Street will be reopened on this Monday.”
