Make acceptance of relationships the norm

KERRY Scott has "never felt more accepted" since moving to Mackay.

The Victorian-at-heart transitioned to the warmth of Central Queensland 12 months ago, with his long-time partner Warren Lynch.

They have been together 32 years and have had to deal with each other's differences just like any other couple, Mr Scott said.

The only difference: their commitment to one another is not recognised legally.

"We have a normal relationship, and it's frustrating and very disappointing that we are not recognised as a 'normal' couple," Mr Scott said.

"We have been through hell and back, just like anyone else, and we wear our wedding rings together, because we are committed to one another."

Even though the Mackay community have welcomed them with open arms, Mr Scott's hope for change remained strong.

He stood by his partner's side at the DIY Rainbow Pride Event at the weekend.

More than 70 people wore their brightest and best to celebrate the DIY Rainbow campaign to raise awareness and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI+) members of our community who may struggle with acts of discrimination and exclusion.

The pavement at the fountain, outside of Mackay Regional Council, was covered in chalk, which Mr Scott described as a representation of the stairway to success.

"It's a progression up, and we're about three-fourths of the way up the stairs at the moment, and the top will be the final answer of cultural diversity, acceptance and legal acknowledgement," he said.
