Committee to run Sister City

SISTERLY love will be in the chamber air this morning when the Fraser Coast council looks to nail down its international connections.

The council will consider setting up a community committee to help run its Sister City program.

Leshan in China and Otsuki in Japan are sister cities to Hervey Bay while Kasukabe in Japan is linked with Maryborough.

The tie with Leshan was strengthened at the end of 2009 with the signing of an agreement between Leshan Vocational and Technical College and Wide Bay TAFE.

The council also set up a fund to help the Leshan region in the wake of a devastating earthquake in 2008.

The Fraser Coast council’s senior community development officer, Debra Moore, will bring forward a proposal this morning to put in place a committee involving three members of the council, two members of council staff and one community member representing each of the sister cities.

It is proposed that funded travel arrangements for sister city exchanges will be limited to financial support for the mayor and chief executive officer, or their elected nominees. Any other committee member wishing to travel would do so at the expense of the individual.
