Axe swinger and dangerous driver jailed

A MAN who swung an axe at a woman, broke into a couple's home with a pick handle and was seen driving dangerously on the Bruce Hwy for more than an hour will remain in jail until January 25 next year.

Grant James Davies, 48, pleaded guilty in Maryborough District Court to breaking and entering, dangerous driving and six counts of assault between May 2014 and October 2014.

The court heard Davies went on a year-long violent rampage which included breaking into a Caboolture home and demanding money and swinging an axe at a woman in Maryborough.

He was also seen driving dangerously in the Bruce Hwy for more than an hour and truck drivers were warning others through their UHF radios.

Defence barrister Simone Bain said Davies had significant mental health problems which stemmed from an abusive childhood which included his step-father threatening him with a gun.

Judge David Reid ordered a head sentence of four years jail to be suspended after a year.

As a part of his sentencing, Mr Reid ordered the man attend psychiatric counselling to address his health issues once he was released from prison.
