Man, 70, lucky to survive rolled car and caravan on highway

A VICTORIAN man has had a lucky escape after his Nissan Nevada towing a caravan rolled down an embankment on the New England Highway near Dalveen.

At 1.30pm the 70-year-old male driver allegedly veered left off the road after the Granite Belt drive turn-off where the vehicle then rolled down the embankment into trees.

The man was removed from his vehicle and air-lifted by RACQ care flight to Toowoomba Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Friends traveling back from the Australian Caravan Club's National Muster at Beaudesert in a separate vehicle said they became worried when their friend was no longer behind them.

Rob Tudor said they attempted to contact him over the two-way-radio before calling his mobile.

"We were about to turn around when we saw a police car speed past with sirens on," he said.

Before the man was airlifted to hospital, he requested his companions find the urn containing ashes of his deceased wife.
