Court: man accused of ploughing truck into house to kill

A MAN accused of trying to murder seven people when he drove his prime mover into a Maryborough home is still undergoing surgery for major burns.

Denis Ian Harris, 53, did not appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court when police successfully sought an order for fingerprints, a DNA sample and photos.

The court heard those standard identification practices for police could not be done because Mr Harris was suffering from severe burns after the prime mover caused a blaze to tear through the Oakhurst home.

A 16-year-old girl was left fighting for her life with fourth-degree burns to a third of her body from the fire. Her mother also suffered burns to her face.

They were among seven people in the house when the truck ploughed into it but they all managed to escape before fire destroyed the house.

Vinton Pedley, from Legal Aid Queensland, said his client was still at the Royal Brisbane Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for his injuries.

A prosecutor asked for the matter to be returned to Maryborough but she was not successful.

"It's in the public interest for the offences to proceed through committal in the district where they originated," she said.

Mr Pedley told the court he sought a psychiatric report for his client and would need a six-week adjournment.

He said with his client still undergoing medical treatment in Brisbane, it made sense to keep the file in the city for now.

"I'm seeking a full brief as well. Until I have a brief and a report, the matter can't really progress," he said.

Magistrate John Costello said the brief should be provided by May 19 and adjourned the case until June 2 at 9am.

He said the balance favoured keeping the case in Brisbane "for the time being".

Mr Harris was remanded in custody and made no application for bail.

He is charged with 16 charges including seven counts of attempted murder, four counts of arson for three vehicles and the house and dangerous driving among others.
