Man charged with breaking police officer's jaw

A MAN has been charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly breaking a police officer's jaw in Mount Isa overnight.

Police were responding to complaints about people drinking at George McCoy Park about 7.15pm last night when the alleged assault occurred.

Police will allege as they spoke to a man he punched an officer in the face causing him to fall to the ground.

The 32-year-old male constable was taken to Mount Isa Base Hospital with facial injuries, including a broken jaw.

The man fled the scene but was later found at a Bougainville Street house in Soldiers Hill where he resisted arrest before being taken into custody.

The 24-year-old Mount Isa man was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, resisting arrest and obstruct police and two counts of assault police.

He will be remanded in custody and appear in Mount Isa Magistrates Court on Monday.
