Man dead as car veers into tree
A 21-YEAR-OLD man is dead and four teenage boys are recovering in hospital following a horrific single-vehicle accident on Seven Mile Road at Tinana on Saturday.
Police said initial investigations had found the 16-year-old learner driver lost control of the car at 5.15pm causing it to career off the gravel road and smash into a tree.
The front passenger was declared dead at the scene and firefighters had to use the jaws of life to free the three back seat passengers – two 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old – from the mangled wreckage.
Two were airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the other two were taken to the Hervey Bay Hospital. All five were Maryborough residents.
Saturday’s fatal accident brings the Maryborough police district’s road toll to 17 deaths in 15 crashes. The state’s road toll now stands at 302.
With Christmas holidays fast approaching, police are again warning Fraser Coast residents to take extra care on the roads.
The Forensic Crash Unit will continue to investigate the fatal accident at Tinana and, as part of the investigation, will run mechanical checks on the sedan.
