Man drowns trying to save child

A 49 YEAR old Gladstone man has died while trying to save a child caught in a rip at Agnes Water.

About 5.15pm on Monday the deceased and two other men were fishing off the main beach when they spotted a young child in difficulty in the surf.

All three men went into the water to try to save the child and all three men got into difficulty.

Bystanders were able to bring two of the men back to shore but the deceased man was dragged out into the ocean by a rip.

A local surfer went out after the man and brought him back to shore.

The surfer and local life guards performed CPR on the man for 45 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

The man was pronounced dead and his body was taken to Bundaberg Hospital.

The man has been identified and his family have been advised.
