Mackay police officer 'critical' after being struck by car

A MACKAY police officer of 15 years is fighting for his life in a Townsville Hospital, after he was hit by a car Wednesday night.

The off-duty police officer was "out and about" on the Glenella-Richmond Rd at the time.

Emergency services were called to the accident just before 8.30pm, and it was then that the first responders identified the man as a police officer.

Police colleagues have described it as a "tragic incident".

"This has come on the back of a very difficult week after the death of Snr Const (Brett) Forte, who was known to many people in Mackay, so it's just been a pretty bad week for the QPS as a whole," Acting City Inspector for Mackay Adrian Rieck said.

Snr Sgt Rieck knew the police officer who is still in a critical condition in Townsville, and that made this situation "a little bit close to home", he said.

"It is an emotive thing, it is upsetting... you don't like to see anyone get injured in these incidents, but when you do personally know someone, I'd be lying if it doesn't affect you as a person.

"We are just offering all of the support to the officer and his family."

The 44-year-old man was originally taken to the Mackay Base Hospital with a head injury and multiple fractures, before being flown to Townsville early Thursday where he remains in a "stable but extremely critical" condition.

The police officer had been in Mackay for about 18 months and worked within the Mackay District in the general duty section. His wife is also believed to work in the Queensland Police Service.

Forensic Crash Unit are investigating how the incident occurred, but at this stage they have said it was a tragic incident.
