Man headbutted wife's old friend

TREVOR Marriage saw a man put his hand on his wife’s shoulder so he went over and headbutted him.

The innocent victim was an old school friend of Marriage’s wife who was just saying hello and talking about the good old days.

“You put two and two together and came up with five and headbutted an innocent man” Magistrate Damien Dwyer told Marriage in court on Friday.

Marriage, a 22-year-old father of two, pleaded guilty in court last Wednesday to assault and was remanded in custody for two nights before he was sentenced on Friday.

Mr Dwyer said Marriage was at Kate O’Reily’s Irish Bar with his wife when she left to go outside for a few moments and met up with someone she had known from her school days.

Marriage, who was intoxicated, went outside and saw the man with his hand on her shoulder.

“There was nothing untoward about what was happening between the two of them,” Mr Dwyer said.

“Your reaction was completely over the top and irresponsible.

“It was a complete king hit, a coward’s act.

“A strong deterrent has to be sent out to all young men who go out and get a belly full of grog and become violent on the streets of Mackay... violence on the streets of Mackay will not be tolerated.”

Marriage was placed on probation for 18 months and was ordered to pay $500 in compensation to the man he headbutted.

He also was banned from entering any licensed premises within the boundaries of the Mackay Regional Council for four months. That includes every hotel, nightclub and licensed restaurant, even liquor booths at sporting venues.
