Man held, one escapes in van heist
A MAN has been arrested and another is on the run after leading police on a dawn chase around Hervey Bay yesterday.
The men are accused of stealing a caravan from Burrum Heads and towing it to Hervey Bay before being cornered by police and fleeing from the scene.
About 4am police received calls from concerned Burrum Heads residents who reported a car driving the streets slowly without the head lights on.
Soon after police received another call from a resident who said they saw the car towing a caravan and driving away from the area.
Police intercepted the car on the Pialba Burrum Heads Road but the driver allegedly refused to pull over.
They later tracked him down in Pantlins Lane, Urraween.
The front seat passenger jumped out of the vehicle and ran into nearby bushland, escaping police.
The dog squad were called to search for the man AND worked throughout the day but tracking was made difficult by wet weather.
The 33-year-old driver from Toogoom was arrested at the scene and later charged with stealing.
He is expected to front the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday.
Scenes of Crime officers have fingerprinted and photographed the 2008 Jayco caravan and returned it to its owners.
The man who got away is described as being tall with black hair.
He was dressed in dark clothes and is believed to be caucasian.
