Man hurt after truck plunges off bridge

JUST four months after Michael Blinman was saved after a crane he was in plunged into Reliance Creek at Habana, another man has been injured after the truck he was in went over Charlie Crear Memorial Bridge and into the creek.

The single-vehicle crash took place yesterday on Mackay-Habana Rd about 10.05am. The man suffered facial injuries and was transported to Mackay Base Hospital, a police spokesman said. A hospital spokeswoman said the man was treated, but not admitted.

Habana Progress Association president Peter Attard said an increase in traffic and population in the Habana area means the bridge should be a priority to be upgraded.

He said nobody wanted to see accidents in the area, but the bridge was 50 years old and it hadn't been improved in all that time.

""Most roads are not too bad. It's just the bridge," he said.

"It can be dangerous, especially for traffic that isn't used to the area, as there's a blind corner."

Mr Attard said they hadn't been successful with the Department of Transport and Main Roads in their attempt to get an upgrade to the bridge.

"We have been in contact with Main Roads," Mr Attard said. They did not have any plans to upgrade the bridge.

"So hopefully in the next couple of months we can persuade them. We're organising another letter to go to Main Roads with data including increased traffic flow."

Mackay councillor and Habana Progress Association member Laurence Bonaventura said it was worrying another truck had gone into the creek.

"If ever you drive across that bridge it is a little bit daunting as you can see a large drop on one side. There's no safety barrier."
