Man of the moment Matty Schlein makes his mark

THE Hervey Bay derby turned into a day Matthew Schlein came of age in Bay Power's senior squad.

A Power junior, the 18-year-old was eased into the club's top grade over the past few seasons.

He took centre stage at Keith Dunne Oval yesterday when the young forward was awarded the Anzac Day medal in his side's 61-point win over cross-town Hervey Bay Bombers.

Schlein was responsible for a series of major, game-changing moments throughout the game, but he swiftly shut down talk of his domination of the front-line.

"I don't know about that, I just try to play my role for the team, do as best as I can and put the effort in at training each week," he said.

Schlein described the win, in which the Bay restricted the Bombers to just four goals, as a team effort.

"To keep them to 32 was a really good effort, everyone did their job and it showed on the scoreboard," he said.

Coach Michael Gay praised Schlein's impact, but his comments weren't restricted to just this week.

A moment 20 seconds into their first-round win over Maroochydore Roos stood out to Gay as a mark of Schlein's progress, which the mentor described as exciting for the club.

"We're really excited with Matty Schlein coming through the junior ranks, he took some wonderful hangers today and he set the tone from the first game we played," Gay said.

"The first 20 seconds he backed into a pack and took a mark, he's taken off from where he left."

Bombers coach Tony Potter said his side lacked a man to match Schlein.

"Matty Schlein was really good. We just didn't have a match-up to go with him in the air," Potter said.
