Man sets fire to ex's house

A 38-YEAR-OLD man who lit his ex-girlfriend's home on fire because she broke up with him has been jailed for three years.

Richard Charlton Pruciak yesterday pleaded guilty in Bundaberg District Court to an offence of arson he committed on March 15 this year.

Prosecutor Sarah Dennis said Pruciak had been living with his partner, her teenage son and another man in a rental house on Queen St when the pair broke up and he was asked to leave.

"The occupant had ended the relationship with the defendant and asked him to move out of the house," Ms Dennis said.

"He had made a number of threats in days leading up to the offence that he would burn the house down."

Ms Dennis said about 8.30pm on the night in question, the home was empty and Pruciak snuck into the garage and lit a fire.

She said the blaze destroyed the garage and burned through a wall into the house, causing $20,000-$30,000 damage to the home which was uninsured and could not be rented out again until about three months after the fire.

"He comes before the court as a mature aged man with a criminal history of some length in three different states," Ms Dennis said.

Defence barrister Lars Falcongreen said Pruciak had a tumultuous childhood in which he attended 15 different schools as his family moved to avoid his "violent, alcoholic father".

Mr Falcongreen said his client became a heavy drinker at the age of 12 and began using speed at 14.

"He was abusing a lot of alcohol following the break down of this relationship and was living rough behind some shops in that area," he said.

Judge Brad Farr SC noted the affected home was surrounded by another house to one side, a vacant block of land on the other and a childcare centre on the block behind.

"You have caused significant damage to the property of another," Judge Farr said.

"You have caused a significant financial impact on the owner of that house."

Pruciak was sentenced to three years jail with parole on March 16, 2013.
