Man who couldn't afford driving fines, fined another $1k

A DRIVER who didn't pay his rego or fines because he couldn't afford to, has been slapped with almost $1000 more to pay off.

In November, when Abdulrahman Saleh Aldousari was pulled over by police in his black Lexus on Maud St he didn't know his licence had been suspended because of unpaid fines.

But, he told officers he'd received a number of payment notices and ignored them.

Checks of the car showed it was unregistered which Aldousari admitted he knew, but said he couldn't afford to pay the registration so he decided to run the risk.

Police charge Aldousari and confiscated his numberplates for seven days.

He pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court today to driving unlicensed and unregistered.

Aldousari told the court he'd "borrowed some money" and paid off the fines, but he now has a fresh batch to pay off with magistrate Ron Madsen fining him a total of $872 and suspending his licence for one month.
