Manny Pacquiao insisting on rematch against Horn

MANNY Pacquiao has taken out a multimillion-dollar insurance policy against losing to Jeff Horn at Suncorp Stadium on July 2 by insisting on a guaranteed Brisbane rematch in November.

Although he is one of the greatest boxers of all time, Pacquiao, who arrives in Brisbane this morning to promote the Horn fight, is taking no chances against the undefeated Fighting Schoolteacher from Acacia Ridge.

Horn's promoter, Dean Lonergan, confirmed that Pacquiao had a rematch clause in his contract guaranteeing him a return fight at the 55,000-seat Suncorp in case Horn springs a massive upset in the biggest fight ever held in Australia.

"It's an immediate rematch clause,'' Lonergan said.

"If Jeff wins the world title Manny wants it back straight away. Brisbane will be the focus of the boxing world on July 2 and with Manny's promoter, Bob Arum, now involved Queensland is set to host some huge fights over the next few years.''

Pacquiao, who is earning more than $10 million for the fight, will be defending his WBO welterweight (66kg) title against Horn, the No. 2 contender. In the latest Ubet markets Horn is $4 and Pacquiao $1.22.

Horn is bolstered by the strongest team in Australian boxing.

Coaching fighters part-time while building an enormously successful investment business, Horn's trainer, Glenn Rushton, has developed a team of champions in the home gym of his Stretton mansion.

Training beside Horn every day is Irish-born Dennis Hogan, the No. 3 contender for the WBO super-welterweight (70kg) title held by Mexican great Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Big Joe Goodall, a Commonwealth Games super-heavyweight silver medallist in Glasgow three years ago, is one of the favourites for the world amateur championships in Germany in August.

Super-middleweight (76kg) Sam Banney and welterweight Nathan Webber are both former Australian amateur champions now making their way in the professional ranks, Cameron Hammond is an Olympian and until recently a world-rated professional welterweight, while Zach Bacigalupo is a State 91kg titleholder.

Horn says all their success is encouraging him to create a great upset at Suncorp in 10 weeks.

"My trainer is a very smart man in business and in boxing," Horn said.

"I came to Glenn 11 years ago to learn self-defence because I was getting picked on at high school. I certainly wasn't a tough guy - I didn't even know how to throw a punch properly.

"But Glenn worked with me and made me believe in myself. Now I'm fighting one of the greatest boxers of all time.

"Apart from Dennis, Glenn has worked with most of the boxers at the gym from day one and that's quite amazing to make champions out of guys who've never had a fight in their life.''

Rushton, 59, spent most of his life teaching and promoting martial arts as a sideline to his business activities, but began concentrating on boxing as Horn eyed a spot at the London Olympics.
