Marijuana not helping, court told

“IF you're going to continue using this drug, I strongly suggest you do some reading on the effect it has on one’s mind. You might think it’s helping you but if you look at medical findings, you may find it’s not.”

These were Magistrate Denis Beutel’s words of advice to Hervey Bay man Bradley Bossom this week after convicting him on drug related charges.

The Hervey Bay Magistrates Court heard the man, 23, who suffered schizophrenia, was found in possession of a small bag of marijuana, a bong and a pair of scissors on January 21.

His defence lawyer told the court Bossom had been using marijuana to self-medicate as his medical condition was “very stressful”.

“You need to change your attitude towards the drug,” Mr Beutel said before ordering Bossom to attend a drug diversion program.
