Mariners hammer Bundy in trial

THE FRASER Coast Mariners blew away the cobwebs and their rugby union rivals in Urangan on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners turned on the pre-season style to hammer a Bundaberg representative team 36-5 in a trial game at the Walkers Road Sports Complex.

It was the Mariners first game of the year but it didn’t look like it as they cruised to a 19-0 lead by half-time and they never looked back.

Winger Nathan Bensein and centre James Gunn both scored a couple of tries each.

Trent De Vere also crossed after he made an impressive burst from the halfway line while Troy Ngatai also got his name on the list of tryscorers.

Mariners prop Iain Everiss said the performance was a promising one.

“We played some really good rugby at times and that was real good considering it was our first hit-out of the year,” Everiss said.

“I know it was only a trial but there was a lot of positives to come out of it.”
