Mariners stalwart set for WA Stockman Rugby tour

RUGBY: The opportunity to line up against ex-Super Rugby franchise Western Force is more than just the chance to play with and against top flight footballers for Trent Devere.

The Fraser Coast Mariners player-coach will be part of the Australian Stockman Rugby side to tour WA.

Devere will fly out of Hervey Bay today to link with his teammates ahead of two games. On Monday night, they will line up against the Force's under-19s team, before a Saturday night spectacle against Force's top squad next week.

For Devere, it is not only a chance to add another highlight to his rugby resume, but can serve as a recruitment tool for future junior and senior players to join the Mariners.

"If young kids can see how you can see the world through rugby it could entice a few more to play the sport,” he said.

Devere has travelled to South America, New Zealand, and to most regional centres throughout Queensland to play rugby. A number of his Fraser Coast Mariner teammates travelled to the United States earlier this year.

Fraser Coast rugby legend Mark Cassidy will also be involved as a physiotherapist.

Stockman Rugby is coached by former Wallabies Jimmy Holbeck, Nic Henderson and Guy Shepherdson.
