Marsh left to count million dollar cost of injury

CRICKET: Mitchell Marsh's dodgy shoulder is set to cost him close to a million dollars.

Having struggled with an injured right shoulder for most of the summer, Marsh was sent home early from Australia's Test tour of India last week to see a specialist.

Early fears are he could be out for nine months, with the West Australian reporting on Monday that he requires a full shoulder reconstruction.

That would not only rule him out of the Champions Trophy in June and put him in serious doubts for the Ashes, but also end his hopes of playing in this year's Indian Premier League.

Missing the tournament would cost Marsh about $958,000, as the 25-year-old is on a monster contract with Rising Pune Supergiants.

Last year the all-rounder played only three matches for the struggling IPL franchise before heading home early with a side strain.

Marsh battled the shoulder injury throughout the summer, and his pace had dipped noticeably in recent weeks. He was called on to bowl only five overs across the opening two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series.

"We have been managing (it) up until now but unfortunately it has progressively deteriorated to a point where he is unable to function at the level required," Australian team physiotherapist David Beakley said after Marsh was ruled out of the series.
