Business district under expansion
THINK outside the square is Peter Switzer's advice to the business people trying to revitalise Maryborough's central business district.
“You're going to have to get a point of difference,” he told the Chronicle.
Mr Switzer said a shopping centre in Sydney was revitalised by the manager offering subsidised rents to attract unusual and exotic businesses.
He said the first thing he would do was survey the local area and see what people thought was missing and to ask what they wanted.
“If you can't provide what they want you're going to have to come up with something that they don't know they want yet,” he said.
For example, if an external shopping centre was attracting people away from the CBD then think about what it didn't offer, he said.
“It might be they don't offer quality restaurants, they might not offer a place where people can go out to dance or it might be an entertainment precinct.
“That's what you've got to come up with.
“If nothing changes, nothing changes.”
