Ian third at shooting titles

A STRONG contingent of Maryborough shooters, led by top shot Ian Gregory, competed at the Queensland Smallbore Championships, held at the Belmont Range in Brisbane on the weekend – and they did themselves proud.

Gregory finished a close third in the bench rest event, a precision event of 120 shots over two days.

He posted an aggregate score of 1185 to place behind the eventual winner, Barry Hilzinger from Brisbane, and Toowoomba’s John Patzwald, who both shot 1188.

Maryborough veteran shooter Roy Muller finished fifth with a total of 1183.

In the Queensland Cup championship for prone shooting, Maryborough’s Rod Faint placed ninth with a score of 1127.

The cup was won by Dane Samson with 1170.

Competitors travelled from as far as Charleville to attend the championships and shot at electronic targets.

The crowd was able to follow the action with scores relayed in real time on a big screen for the first time.

After scores were somewhat affected by the wind on Saturday, there was some great shooting under ideal conditions on Sunday with Patzwald posting a high 599 bench score from a possible 600.
