Maryborough's McCarthy to ride at the Tour de France
A FORMER Aldridge State High School student will compete in the biggest cycling event on the planet.
Jay McCarthy was named as one of Bora-Hansgrohe's riders for the 23-day event, which starts at Dusseldorf, Germany, on July 1.
A multi-talented sportsman who made state triathlon teams, McCarthy competed at a national level for cycling while he was at high school, then eventually moved to Brisbane to further his career.
He finished third overall at the Tour Down Under in January. He was fourth in 2016, as well as the Young Rider Jersey winner.
Fraser Coast Cycling Club president Scott Gilmour said McCarthy's start was "absolutely terrific” for the local cycling scene.
The Tour will air on SBS.
