American entertainer is cock-a-hoop for Mary Poppins
HE FELL in love with the magic of Mary Poppins when he was just four years old.
Now American entertainer Mat Plendl has travelled to Maryborough to visit the birthplace of P.L. Travers, the woman who created his favourite story.
"I've been floating on a Mary Poppins cloud since I arrived," he said.
Mat has already visited Allora, where the author also lived, and will soon travel to Sydney.
"On this trip I've had the most extraordinary sense of being in the right place at the right time," he said.
Mr Plendl arrived in Australia several weeks ago to perform his famous hula hoop act at Jupiter's Casino on the Gold Coast.
He said he had always related to the characters of Mary Poppins.
Like the Banks children in the Poppins book, Mr Plendl and his sister had dozens of nannies.
"They came and went with the wind and one of them took us to see Mary Poppins and I was just blown away," he said.
The Proud Marys met with Mat during his Maryborough visit.
President Shirley Sengstock said his visit was wonderful.
"It's just an amazing collection that he has," she said.
Mary Elizabeth Fay Henderson, a founding member of the Proud Marys, said Mat's visit to Maryborough was exciting.
"It's all for publicity, that's the main thing, every year more people come to the Mary Poppins Festival and it's growing," she said.
