Are you too old to wear a bikini at 46?
A 46-YEAR-old former Fraser Coast woman has become an internet sensation after sharing a photo of herself in a sexy black bikini that has been seen by more than 180,000 people in a day.
A snide remark from a teenager on a beach inspired Julie Cross, now a professional motivational speaker and mum of two living in Brisbane, to share a photo of her bikini-clad body.
Julie, who went to Maryborough State High School and has lived in Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Tiaro, said it was a bit of a surprise when the image went viral.
But she believes it was the words that accompanied the photo - empowering other women to love and accept themselves - rather than the bikini shot that struck a chord with people.
At Maryborough Aquatic Centre, Julie's thoughts and feelings were shared, with Jane Chappell, Sara Evers and Sharon Cahill saying as long as a woman felt comfortable, she should wear whatever she wanted.
While Sara said she felt comfortable in a two-piece and Jane felt more comfortable in a tankini, they both agreed, women should do whatever they felt comfortable with.
Julie said it was sad that women were still having the same conversations about body image as it was clear many girls and women still didn't love or accept themselves as they were.
Julie said the teenage girl who made the cruel remark after seeing her - "I think she is over the bikini"- was not to be judged as it was just evidence of how she too had fallen victim to the expectations and body image issues many women struggle with.
"I wasn't angry or annoyed, just disappointed," Julie said.
