Downer EDI Maryborough workforce shrinks with 19 losses

THE completion of a rail extension project in Perth has caused 19 job losses at Downer EDI.

A spokesman for Downer confirmed that last week 12 boilermakers and carpenters at the Maryborough facility were notified of redundancy due to the Perth Urban Rail Develop Extension project reaching final stages.

"In addition, seven managers were also notified of redundancy," he said.

"The seven managers made redundant were actually a combination of professional and administration staff."

The redundancies take Downer's Maryborough workforce to 237 people.

The Chronicle understands Bombardier has also offered 13 redundancies from their Maryborough yard, which is scheduled to close this year.

While a company spokeswoman would not confirm the number, she said the "demobilisation of the Maryborough facility" was "moving according to plan".

"The necessary steps are being taken together with the staff of Maryborough as we close out remaining work and prepare for the closure of the facility by year end," she said.

"There is a further opportunity for a number of the employees to be involved with the initial testing of the new QNGR trains in and around Maryborough at the beginning of 2016."

Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders was saddened by the losses.

"There's nothing I can do about Bombardier," he said.

Mr Saunders said he had been in high-level discussions with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Queensland Rail officials.

"There's a lot of QR contracts coming up and Maryborough is more than well placed," he said. "The DP (Deputy Premier) is right across the issues."
