M'boro trio powers Qld Country to big success
HOCKEY: Three of Maryborough's best hockey players have helped Queensland finish in the top two of both male and female Australian Country Hockey Championships at Berri, South Australia.
Tarack Chappell and Matt Axelsen played for the men's teams while Eva Kersnovske starred for the successful women's team.
Kersnovske was named Player of the Final as Queensland beat New South Wales 1-0 in the gold medal match.
She scored three goals at the tournament, in which Queensland went through undefeated (six wins and one draw).
Chappell and Axelsen, a goalkeeper, were part of a Queensland team which finished second.
The side drew four of their five pool games, a 4-2 win against Western Australia the only entry to the "W” column before the finals.
A 3-1 win against Australian Defence Force sent the Maroons through to the final but a strong NSW outfit steamrolled Queensland 5-0.
Chappell, who plays for Wallaroos in Maryborough and Norths in Brisbane, was named in the under-21 Australian Country team after the week-long carnivcal.
