McCarthy ninth in Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race
MARYBOROUGH product Jay McCarthy produced a solid ride to finish ninth in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
His BORA-Hansgrohe teammates worked together to provide McCarthy a chance to win in the closing stages, though aggressive riding ensured a tight finish.
McCarthy said he was pleased to have his teammates' support.
"There was a lot of stress coming into the final laps," he said.
"We had all the team there and everyone tried to look after me coming into the final lap.
"It was a bit hectic coming into the sprint and I was a bit boxed in. It was a top ten finish, but I feel I probably should have been a bit more confident in the sprint."
His ninth-placed finished comes a week after he finished third in the Tour Down Under, behind BMC Racing Team's Richie Porte and Columbian Esteban Chaves.
