Me and My Ride: Rob's timber boat works a treat

ROB White and his family are Mackay locals who love getting out on the Pioneer River, spending time with family and friends and skiing.

Make, model and year? This timber boat, Gambler, is home-made. It's around 20 years old. I purchased it from the fellow who built it in Bundaberg. It had been parked in his shed for about 10 years and I bought it back here and tidied it up.

What's this boat mean to you? I always wanted a wooden boat. We have skied all our life with firbre glass boats and I always wanted a wooden boat.

Where have you been in it? We do a lot of skiing on the river here. We took it to Townsville for a wooden boat show a couple of years ago and also to the Historic to Modern Ski and Boat Show that was on recently in Mackay.

What's your favourite memory? Working on it. I get a lot of pleasure out of working with the timber; and also the people you meet in the boating circle.

Would you ever trade it in? No. I think it will stay in the family for good.

How does it fit into your lifestyle? We use it whenever we can. We go up the river skiing and have top weekends on the water. The whole family waterskis and they have grown up on the Pioneer River. We have done a bit of racing and a lot of social skiing and socialising with good people.

How do you look after it? I don't really, I put it in the shed with a cover over it until next time, pull it out and go again. The guy who did the timberwork put 16 coats of clear on the deck so it's just a polish once a year.

Have you had any challenges? Getting money from my wife to get it to where it is today.

What's your dream boat or trip? Tasmania has a timber boat show once a year and I'd love to get down there and show off my pride and joy along with everyone else who goes there.
