Mentors needed to help primary school kids learn

A MENTORING program is calling for potential youth mentors to help primary school students who need extra support.

The Fraser Coast Youth Mentoring program is looking for people who can help younger students just beginning to learn how to read and just starting out at school.

A new training program will begin in October with the aim to have mentors ready to help students when the next school year begins.

A spokeswoman for the program said the mentors would help in the early learning stages before learning difficulties translated into behaviour issues.

Potential mentors were required to go through an interview and induction phase and would receive help to obtain a blue card to work with young children.

The program is run out of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.
