Middle Ages brought to life in Maryborough

THE best of the Middle Ages will be recreated by a Maryborough medieval group in Queens Park on Saturday.

Society of Creative Anachronism member Jaymes Zemek said group wanted to let the community know what they do in an effort to enrol more members.

"We had a group start in Hervey Bay about eight years ago, and now, since returning to Maryborough, I wanted to see if there was any interest," Mr Zemek said.

"Our group travels to Gin Gin each Tuesday for training, but I would like to get a Maryborough group up and running," he said.

Mr Zemek lives and breathes the medieval times and has started a Maryborough group called Mercenaries of Burnfield, a branch of the SCA Burnfield in Gin Gin.

"We like to celebrate everything medieval - representing the years in Europe from 600 to 1600," he said.

Mr Zemek said the newcomers' event would include two fighting displays.

"There will be the light combatants (rapier) similar to fencing, and there are heavy combatant tournament using rattan weapons," he said.

"We will have people showing off their arts and sciences, including traditional brewing, cooking, sewing, dancing, illumination and calligraphy, leather and bone work and armouring."
