Minister in town as work begins on new Torbanlea floodway

TIME consuming road closures on Torbanlea-Pialba Rd will be a thing of the past with works underway to replace the existing concrete floodway.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the $1.8 million project would reinforce concrete culverts on Torbanlea-Pialba Road.

"Heavy rainfall and localised flooding has resulted in multiple road closures causing very frustrating delays for motorists," Mr Bailey said.

"The condition of the existing floodway has deteriorated in recent years and these works will reduce the need for ongoing maintenance works at this location."

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said this was a heartfelt issue for the residents of Howard and Torbanlea.

"This road is a major connection from Hervey Bay to the Bruce Highway and can often be a very frustrating commute during heavy downpours," he said.

"The Palaszczuk Government is getting on with the job of fixing this causeway because locals are tired of these inevitable delays.

"School buses use this road regularly and these works will go a long way to improving the safety in wet weather periods."
