Missing Qld fisherman 'may have been taken by croc'

POLICE in far north Queensland have found a body after a lengthy search for a spear fisherman who was reported missing on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Cairns man was reported missing after his unoccupied dinghy was found anchored off Palmer Point, north of Innisfail, around 6pm.

An air and sea search continued until this morning when a body was sighted just south of Palmer Point about 8am.

Initial investigations suggest the man may have been taken by a crocodile.

Wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection are targeting the crocodile for removal.

Police will join wildlife officers tonight to search for the animal, believed to be around 4 metres in length.
