Maroons marvel at size of 'NFL Monstar' Jesse

HOW big is new NFL signing Jesse Williams?

Big enough to cast a shadow over the Maroons' State of Origin preparation at Palmer Coolum Resort yesterday.

That's how big.

But while the Queenslander's 191cm and 147kg frame makes him 35kg heavier than the Maroons' biggest player, Sam Thaiday, it is his staggering success more than his physical dimensions that make him such an attention magnet.

How big is Jesse Williams? Normally Maroons stars like Thaiday and Johnathan Thurston have people pestering them for photos.

Yesterday it was them pestering the 22-year-old.

That's how big.

A group of Maroons, including Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater, chatted with the NFL's first indigenous Australian recruit before Queensland's initial training session for the Origin decider in Sydney on Wednesday.

Williams, who played defensive tackle in the University of Alabama's consecutive national titles in 2011-12, signed with the Seattle Seahawks after April's NFL draft and begins pre-season training on July 23.

He didn't get the millions of dollars a year predicted after failing to be selected early, but will still pocket $2.37 million over four years.

The heavily inked mammoth they call Tha Monstar played league as a junior and in his youth dreamed of playing for the Maroons.

"Yeah, definitely, that would have been hopefully one of the avenues I might have taken playing sports," he said.
