More to the RSL than some realise

KEN Crockford is no stranger to battle. After fighting for his country, and battling to come home after falling ill overseas, he now faces another challenge with the diagnosis of pneumonia.

But in true blue Anzac style, he's determined he won't be defeated.

Without the support of the RSL and the Fraser Coast community, he would still be fighting for life in a German hospital, thousands of kilometres away from his home.

The difference this assistance has made cannot be understated for Lance Cpl Crockford and his wife, but it's the type of help that often flies under the radar of the general public.

For a lot of us, we associate the RSL with a nice meal out and a drink with mates, but for the Returned and Services League committees behind the clubs, there's a lot more to it.

RSL Queensland offers everything from home and hospital visits, counselling, housing and crisis support, and professional advice of accessing entitlements like pensions and other support for veterans and their families.

They also give grants and practical support for community projects and youth development programs.

Next time the Anzac or Poppy Appeal tin comes around, dig deep and say thanks for the services our RSLs provide.
