Motorist caught 37kmh above the speed limit

A SPEEDSTER was caught travelling almost 40kmh above the speed limit during a weekend traffic operation in the Tiaro area.

The driver was found hurtling down the Bruce Hwy at 137kmh - well above the 100kmh speed limit.

Tiaro police Senior Constable Chris Burke said the motorist was one of 18 people to be issued with a traffic infringement notice for breaking road rules including speeding, not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone.

Police conducted a weekend long traffic operation on the Bruce Hwy in the Tiaro and Bauple area.

Snr Const Burke said police also detected five drug drivers.

"Four tested positive for cannabis and one for both amphetamine and cannabis," he said.

Those who test positive for driving with drugs in their system automatically have their licence suspended for 24 hours.

During the 147 random breath tests conducted only one positive result was received - a female who recorded a blood alcohol content reading of 0.053%.

The joint operation between the Maryborough and Gympie Road Policing Units also found 11 motorists driving unregistered cars, 10 uninsured vehicles and four drivers who were driving without a licence.
