Alleged rapist found with cannabis, rifle, ammo in caravan

A MOUNT Morgan man who was found with cannabis, a rifle and ammunition in his caravan had more serious charges before the court, according to defence lawyer Mark Platt.

The 28-year-old, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to eight charges in Rockhampton Magistrates Court from custody last Friday including drug, weapons and bail charges.

While Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll declared 66 days pre-sentence custody for the offending, the man was committed to the Supreme Court of Rockhampton on three counts of rape.

Police prosecutor Manon Barwick told the court police searched the Mount Morgan residence at 2.30pm on December 10 when they found 12 cannabis seeds on the kitchen bench and a fruit drink container fashioned into a bong.

They also found a rifle wrapped in a blanket under the bed and 72 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition.

The man told police he bought the rifle from a friend for pig hunting.

The man pleaded guilty to one count each of failing to provide identifying particulars, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing a weapon, possessing explosives, obstructing police and possessing utensils used in connection with smoking a dangerous drug and two counts of breaching bail conditions.

"His indictable offences loom large over him," defence lawyer Mark Platt said.

"These are not the most serious matters."

Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll told the defendant he "obviously had a problem with dangerous drugs for a long time".

Magistrate O'Driscoll sentenced the man to seven separate terms of imprisonment, served concurrently, with immediate parole.
