Man dons best undies and mud for night out on the town

HE was covered in mud from head to toe, wore nothing but undies and was ready to party.

And that's exactly what 27-year-old Aaron William Canniffe got. A big night out - with the cops.

Cleansed and clothed, Canniffe came face to face with a Gladstone magistrate this week and walked away with a $750 fine.

He ended up in court on Tuesday to plead guilty to three charges after an alcohol-blurred night saw him refused entry into Gladstone's MiE Place nightclub.

He faced individual counts of assault or obstruct a police officer, contravene a police direction or requirement and committing public nuisance, stemming from his escapades on March 29.

Canniffe had appeared outside MiE Place at about 2am on the night in question, dressed in just a pair of underpants and covered head-to-toe in mud after a late-night swim in Auckland Creek.

Police prosecutor Nina Sulzer told the court security had refused entry to Canniffe, due to his bedraggled appearance, before police gave him a move-on direction, asking him to vacate the CBD.

Canniffe began arguing with police, demanding water and direction to the nearest public toilets, before raising his fists and challenging police to a fight.

After being told he was under arrest, Canniffe attempted to evade officers, before struggling to avoid being handcuffed.

Defence solicitor Sharon Kang said her client "was really intoxicated at the time" and that he had no recollection of the events that took place.

Magistrate Russell Warfield noted the incident may have left Canniffe more than a little red-faced.

"The embarrassment factor's probably penalty enough," he said.

Canniffe escaped conviction, but was fined $750.
