Mum resorts to selling pot to pay bills

AN UNEMPLOYED Gailes mum turned to selling weed to pay her bills.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, Calysha Jane Thornton pleaded guilty to a string of drug-related charges.

When police searched her residence on January 16, they found 108.2g of cannabis and various drug utensils.

Officers also found a number of text messages on Thornton's phone that showed she was involved in drug dealing.

Thornton told police she bought weed in a bulk amount, sold a portion of it and smoked the rest.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Donnelly said Thornton had been selling cannabis to people in the local area for a couple of months.

Sgt Donnelly said Thornton, 21, had been unemployed and used the money from selling drugs to pay household bills.

Defence lawyer Greg Ploetz said Thornton had made admissions and co-operated with police.

Mr Ploetz said his client had no criminal history and had recently found employment as a cleaner.

He said Thornton had stopped using drugs since her arrest.

Thornton was placed on a probation order for 18 months.

No convictions were recorded.
