MUNGAR country star Wal Neilsen is building up a solid reputation as a ballad composer thanks to his win in the Top 30 Australian Song Writing Contest.

Mr Neilsen attended the contest's awards last month where his self-penned track 'Cold as Dry Ice' was placed fourth out of 30 finalist entries in the country category.

His second release tune 'Night Rider' has also debuted as number 36 on the Australian Country Tracks chart.

"It means the song must be getting requests as well," he laughed.

Wal will head to perform gigs at the Tamworth Country Music Festival next week where he'll be trained in song composition.
