Muslim women 'fearful' on Sunshine Coast, says Imam's wife

THE wife of the Sunshine Coast's Muslim leader -- Imam Shiekh Zainadine Johnson -- has told how women of Islam living in the region are "fearful" when out in public, despite being generally welcomed by the community.

Emam Turriago is visiting the Sunshine Coast from Indonesia, and appeared on ABC Sunshine Coast on Tuesday morning to answer questions.

The Spanish Ms Turriago told how she was raised a strict Catholic before meeting Mr Johnson and ultimately converting to Islam with him.

She said her western background means she feels comfortable on the Sunshine Coast and in Australia but that other Muslim women feel more exposed when in public.

"For them, because they come from other countries they feel frightened," she said.

"They don't wear (head)scarfs. They say, 'We want to wear the scarfs but we fear'."

"It's a bit different from me, I'm a westerner."

"They're quite fearful the women who are here."

She went on the clarify that this was despite the Sunshine Coast being generally nice to the Muslim women.

She said while many had positive experiences on the Coast, they were fearful that someone might say or do something negative towards them because they were Muslim.

Mrs Turriago talked about her own way of dressing, which covers her body aside from her face.

She said it was part of Islam to not "display your beauty" and that both men and women are expected to "lower their gaze" to avoid being tempted by the opposite sex.

She said she also believes it's a way of "keeping my beauty for my husband".
