Nude New Year: Planning to drop your gear tonight?

DARWIN is well known for its tall tales - and big crocodiles.

But how many remember Northern Territory folk abandoning their clothes to welcome 2000 in the nude.

According to the ABC, about 200 people put on paper aprons and entered a backyard party space dotted with pools of olive oil and tomato sauce.

Then they all got naked.

"It was about being free and not being crazy hot," Nude 2000 co-organiser Tim Sinclair said.

"The idea wasn't to have a big sexual orgy but we didn't know exactly what was going to happen."

Nude 2000 was a New Year's Eve celebration party held in a suburban Darwin backyard and organised by a group of about 10 mates in their mid-20s.

Mr Sinclair and a mate had just founded a six-piece band, Near Earth Objects (NEO), and were musing about the perfect place and manner to debut to a live audience.

"We were running around a forest naked and we thought, 'This is what we need to be doing in Darwin on New Year's'," Mr Sinclair said.

"Somebody in Darwin had just been arrested for going through a McDonald's drive-through naked and was charged this ridiculous amount of money," he said.

"There's been a push at the time to rebel. We were rebelling against other people's ideas of conformity.

"It was a bit of an old Darwin hippy ideology about getting rid of your worries, concerns, anxiousness and the things that separate us."

The house where the party was held featured a stage, a water slide swimming pool, and an oil pit dug in the ground filled with olive oil.

Now in their mid-40s, the Darwin nudists are scattered across Australian cities, however they still hope to one day re-enact their naked New Year's Eve.

"It doesn't matter how many times you do it, it's terrifying," Mr Sinclair said.

"But being naked is a great way to melt away your anxiety and stress with your friends. It's playful."
