JO SIMMONS is usually the one warning others about scams, but a phone call recently caught her off guard.
It was claiming to be from Centrelink.
The Hervey Bay resident is now letting others know about it in the hope that nobody would fall into its trap.
"I had a phone voice-text come through, and as my son sometimes sends me those, I kept listening," Ms Simmons said.
"Then it said it was from Centrelink and that I need to contact Canberra."
The message also uses the name of a person, who is actually the real Department of Human Services general manager.
When Ms Simmons called the Canberra line, they mentioned the change in pensioner payments.
"It was an American voice which helped in making it more believable," she said.
Ultimately, the caller said Ms Simmons was owed money and that a cheque would be delivered to her home.
"I thought that was strange," she said.
"Centrelink usually don't chase you."
As part of the scam, the cheque then fail to be delivered and then the Canberra line calls then person it was meant to be delivered to, asking for their bank details.
