Coast guard commander takes helm of Pocket committee
THE Pocket Community Coordination Committee has started the new year with a new chairman.
Councillor Daniel Sanderson said well-known community member Jukka Manttari had accepted the position and would bring valuable skills to the role.
"Jukka is a long-time flotilla commander with the Volunteer Coast Guard and has vast experience managing people and disaster situations," he said.
"He brings a wealth of knowledge to the role and is very well respected within the community so I am thrilled to have him on board, particularly in time for the summer storm season."
The Pocket was inundated with floodwater in 2013 and the PCCC was established in March last year to help residents come together and assist each other before, during and after natural disasters.
Cr Sanderson said the PCCC provided leadership to the community alongside the council during times of disaster.
"Community members raise issues they feel are important and collaborate to provide solutions," he said.
"The group is working to create a register which outlines member's medical conditions, next of kin and contact details."
The PCCC also advocates for flood season awareness, offering help to neighbours who may be in need of accommodation, helping residents move items to higher ground and checking on neighbours during floods.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 24, at the Maryborough City Hall from 5-6.15pm.
