EDITORIAL: New speed limit will save lives on dangerous road

OUR SAY: For the families who live along the road, and drivers who use it daily, the speed reduction at Pialba-Burrum Heads Rd is simply a life-saver.

There have been too many people hurt or killed along that stretch already, and with traffic increasing rapidly as the Fraser Coast's population grows, there was no hope that the crashes would cease without intervention.

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders has shown he does not muck around when it comes to safety, and pushed the issue with Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey - both deserve acknowledgement for their efforts.

But even a reduced limit is no silver bullet - road users will need to play their part too.

One of the biggest issues with that stretch of road, if you speak with residents, is that people seem to ignore the posted speeds.

This paper has regularly reported on hoons tearing up and down the strip, sometimes reaching speeds of more than 150kmh.

Speed has certainly been a factor in at least one recent crash.

I hope police will show their weight by strictly enforcing the new limit.

A fixed speed camera may also go some way to making sure drivers are doing the right thing.
