New M’boro Woolies on the cards in expansion
MARYBOROUGH will get a second Woolworths supermarket and 30 new retail stores if an expansion to the Station Square Shopping Centre is approved by the Fraser Coast Regional Council next week.
An application to expand retail floor space at the centre by 8826sqm has been recommended to be approved by the council's officers.
Bi-Lo and Big W are the two major tenants at Station Square, but a redevelopment would have supermarket giant Woolworths open their second store in Maryborough.
"Woolworths is committed to the town of Maryborough, highlighted by our recent $10 million refurbishment program to rebuild and reinvest in our existing store following flood damage in 2013," a Woolworths spokesman said.
"We are delighted with the on-going customer support the store has received since the reopening."
The Station Square expansion also makes use of the refurbished store's 394 new car parks.
The extended building is also proposed to cover the existing railway land north of the existing shopping centre and requires partial demolition or relocation of heritage buildings.
Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell welcomed the investment into the heritage city.
"I'm delighted that it's got to a stage where the Green Group particularly and other developers and investors see the enormous potential of the Fraser Coast," he said.
