Thanks to the invention of new materials and use of propane burners, the development of modern hot-air ballooning has progressed to the balloons we see today.

Hot air balloons work because hot air rises. Heating the air inside the balloon causes it to float upwards because hot air is lighter than the cooler air on the outside.
